Elections Cameroon has through the chairperson of the Electoral Board, Dr.Enow Abrams Egbe and his team shared it’s experiences on the use of digital technology and social media in elections.
Their participation in this workshop that took place in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia came on the invitation of the Association of African Election Authorities (AAEA).
The Board Chair and his team from 5 to 7 September 2023 shared ELECAM’s experiences and gave its opinion and suggestions for the amelioration of the draft document.
The aim of this workshop was to validate the guidelines and principles on usage of digital and social media within the framework of elections in Africa, had as specific objectives to:
- Contribute to the integrity of electoral of electoral processes in Africa by providing guidance to EMBs and other relevant electoral stakeholders for identifying opportunities to promote access to electoral information and address challenges in dealing with harms to digital human rights, with particular concern about potentially harmful digital contents and business practices that threaten the integrity of electoral processes and related human rights ;
- Serve as a resource for the digital and social media companies and digital messaging platforms, in their policies dealing with online content;
- Inform regulatory processes under development or review for the digital and social media in the context of elections in a manner that is consistent with international human rights standards and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.
