The people in principle exercise their sovereignty through representatives they directly elect. This is called elections by direct universal suffrage. In this form of elections, we find the election of the President of the Republic, the election of deputies to the National Assembly and finally the election of municipal councilors in the communes.
However, some authorities hold their power after elections made by an electoral college consisting of representatives previously directly elected by the people. Here we speak of indirect universal suffrage. This is the case of the election of senators, by which Senators are elected by regional councilors and municipal councilors. This is also the case for regional elections in which Regional Councilors are elected by an electoral college composed of departmental delegates appointed by municipal councilors but also traditional commanders appointed by traditional chiefs of 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree.
Pending the occurrence of the elections announced for this year 2018, Elecam serenely pursues its deployment in the field to register new voters and proceed to the distribution of electoral cards already produced.
